Underneath the veil

Bride’s traditional costume is particularly connected with the national belief, according to which some elements of the headwear symbolize the protection of the body from bad influences.

People believe that if a bride used red head piece or hid her face underneath the veil or fabric, it represents part of the wedding ritual which has double meaning: on the one hand to protect the bride, while on the other hand to change the status from a bride to a married woman. In that way headwear becomes a visual symbol of the new social status of a woman.
